For over a decade now, Erick Morillo has remained one of the most in-demand and instantly recognisable DJs in the world. From the instant success of his weekly ‘Sessions’ parties in New York, to his coveted residency at Ministry of Sound (he’s still one of the only American DJs to ever hold one) and of course his now legendary Subliminal Sessions parties at Pacha, Ibiza, he now celebrates his 13th historic season at the club in 2010. We here at IntoTheSpotlight thought we’d catch up with him to discuss his career and his new projects.
So Erick, obviously your biggest hit was 'I Like To Move It' - what impact has that record had on your career?
It was incredible. It opened up all the doors for me as it obviously bought me to the UK for the first time and I saw what was going on in the UK and was really blown away by the fact that they had a dance industry and dance videos on TV, dance music on the radio, and dance music playing everywhere. Dance music was really the culture of the country versus what was going on in the United States. So I was like ‘Wow I’m in heaven’. This just really opened my eyes, and opened the doors for everything else that came after.
What is the best aspect of your job?
Wow...(starts laughing)...(then pauses to consider) That I get to live a life I love. I love music. Music is probably up there with sex, money and health. I get paid to make people happy with music. That is like a dream job as far as I’m concerned. I’ve loved music since I was a little kid, and it’s something I will always love doing so the fact that I can turn it into a living to care for my family, surround myself with people who also love music and help other people achieve their dreams is unbelievable.
Yes that is correct, with American Apparel. And it’s something I want to be doing a lot more of in the future. I’m trying to build a little brand, and it’s important as I believe in club culture – that’s what I’m about and now we’re just doing shirts, and girls’ shorts and what have you but there will be a full line next year. It is something I really enjoy.
Can you tell us about 'Voodoo Nights'?
‘Voodoo Nights’ is the theme for my tour this year, for my life basically! It is for the party we do here at Ibiza, we do Wednesdays at Pacha. It is just about creating an environment which people can lose themselves in; I am the head witch doctor and I put people under a spell with my magic! And my magic is my music! It’s all about having fun, and escapism if you will. About losing yourself in music.
And P Diddy's making an appearance tonight?
Yes, there’s going to be a big show tonight. We’re going to show people what we’re all about, what New York City is all about. It’s going to be a great show and I’m excited about it.
Then later this month you're headlining London's SW4 Dance Festival?
Yes indeed, I’m so looking forward to it. I played there two years ago and it was such an amazing experience. I played the main stage and the energy was ridiculous – the London public are just amazing. The park was beautiful, it was a beautiful day - I just love partying in England to be honest with you. For me, I am so looking forward to that, it should be an amazing day. I hope the weather holds up and we have another sunny day for it. I am just so looking forward to it; I think it’s going to be ridiculous!
