After the Film Awards on Thursday, drama critics and theatre practitioners alike gathered today at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London to celebrate and honour another great year of stage shows at the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards. We went along to see who came away victorious.
Somewhat unsurprisingly the ‘Best New Play’ award was given to Richard Bean’s ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’. The farce which stars James Corden has received unanimous positive reviews and is heading to Broadway in April.
Corden though was beaten to the ‘Best Actor’ honour by Benedict Cumberbatch for his tremendous performance in ‘Frankenstein’. Due to the ‘Sherlock’ star’s hectic schedule he was unable to attend the ceremony, but director Danny Boyle was on hand to step in and pick up the award on his behalf.
Sheridan Smith was named ‘Best Actress’ for her role in ‘Flare Path’ whilst Eddie Redmayne won ‘Best Shakespearian Performance’ for ‘Richard II.
Elsewhere, Mike Leigh, Mark Tildesley, Tom Wells and Blanche McIntyre received individual accolades whilst ‘London Road’ was voted ‘Best Musical’.
