Hollywood superstar Kevin Spacey was on hosting duty at Mikhail Gorbachev’s 80th Birthday Gala and before the show we caught up with him.
He told us why he thought it was important that London honoured the former President of the Soviet Union:
“I think to some degree Mikhail Gorbachev has never really gotten his due.
When we look at what is happening around the world today it seems like we can probably draw a straight line to Mikhail Gorbachev and what he began in terms of the freedoms and the changes that he fought for and that people around the world are fighting for still to this day.”
However, when asked if he had bought Gorbachev a birthday present, Spacey replied he hoped the concert would be a suitable gift:
“I hope he has a good time, a lot of his friends are here tonight and there are some terrific performances so we hope mostly he has a smile on his face by the end of the night.”
The Oscar winning actor has been artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in London since 2003.
