‘Killing Bono’ premiered in London last night at The Apollo West End, with crowds of screaming teenage girls bringing Piccadilly Circus to a standstill as they aimed to get a glimpse of stars Ben Barnes and Robert Sheehan.
As well as the two lead actors in the film, many stars walked the red carpet including celebrity guests such as ‘Texas’ frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri, ‘The Undertones’ singer Feargal Sharkey and music legend Rick Astley.
The comedy film tells the ‘true’ story of how two brothers attempt to become global rock stars but can only look on as old school friends U2 become the biggest band in the world.
The film which is actually based on real-life events, although allowed artistic licence, is not just funny, but incredibly moving as you sit watching the mistakes Neil McCormick (Ben Barnes) makes, although you are helpless to save him. Accompanied by a great soundtrack, the movie makes you think about the decisions that shape a life.
The film is also the last to star the great Pete Postlethwaite, and director Nick Hamm was quick to pay tribute to him when speaking on the red carpet:
“He was one of the greats, and to have him on your set was just such an amazing honour.”
With an art-house vibe to the film, a rocking soundtrack and humour throughout, I’d fully recommend going to see this film.
And according to McCormick, even his former classmates in U2 enjoyed it:
"Bono loves the film, he's supported it all the way through. I know that they saw it in Australia, the whole band, and they were rolling around laughing at (U2 bassist) Adam Clayton's hair - mind you, we were doing that in 1977.”
‘Killing Bono’ is released in the UK on 1st April.
