The brainchild of Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald ‘Life in a Day’ is a collection of thousands of videos posted by YouTube users edited into one film showing what happens across the world in one day. The 24th July 2010 to be precise.
The film provides a beautifully sculpted portrait of life on Earth with the running theme being that whilst we are all different our daily routine is exactly the same.
There are numerous fascinating clips included, some heart wrenching, others just plain weird.
Whilst the feat of combining and condensing over 4500 hours of footage into a 90 minute film must be applauded, and the vision of the project highly regarded, unfortunately the film lacks any cutting edge.
It spends a lot of time showing some of the wonders and miracles of daily life, yet for a documentary which intends to show real life there are certain and key elements missing.
Also due to the fact the film is a mixture of so many clips, whilst they have been edited well together, of course any sense of personal attachment to the people is missing due to us only getting a brief glimpse into their life.
Overall, there is plenty of arty footage showing life across the world, but it is a good thing the 4500 hours were cut to 90 minutes as any more would have rendered the visual treat extremely dull.
That being said with art so subjective we do recommend you give this film a chance, even if it is just to see what some YouTube users thought the world would want to see.
The film is released in the UK on the 17th June.
