Stand-up Mark Watson had the crowd in wails of laughter as he bought his nationwide tour to the home of comedy at the Hammersmith Apollo on Friday night.
The comedian, who is a regular star on television panel shows, performed a similar routine at Edinburgh in the summer and has since toured the country with the show.
As Watson told us in October ahead of his tour:
“It (the show) is basically about how I go through my life with a lot of people vaguely recognising me because they’ve seen me on panel shows on TV but most people don’t know quite who I am. I have quite a lot of weird conversations with people whilst they try and work out who I am and that after a while is quite strange. So it is kind of about that really, just going through your life with people constantly saying ‘Do I Know You’ all the time and the awkwardness of having people know who you are but just not that well.”
Watson did indeed engage in a number of anecdotes on this topic, after essentially providing a warm-up act for himself in the first half of the show thanks to his humorous interaction with the audience. The second-half included more of a personal feel, with tales from his life and career as well as references to his two heroes – Barack Obama and Derren Brown!
Showcasing a good balance of improvised comedy and prepared material, Watson ensured everyone in the audience had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, inside what was the biggest venue he has played to so far.
Hopefully Watson is able to play similar venues more often in the future.
