Ahead of the eagerly anticipated Challenge Cup Final next weekend, Rugby League legend Martin Offiah has backed the much fancied Warrington to overcome Leeds and claim the trophy for the second year in a row.
Speaking about sporting memorabilia and his links with SJ Dent & Co Memorabilia Company, Offiah stressed the game “will be very close with whichever team that shows up on the day being able to win it.”
Only when pushed for a name did he back the Wolves. “Warrington have got the emotional edge just because it is over ten years since Leeds have won the trophy; I was unfortunate enough to be in the London side who they beat at the old Wembley stadium back in 1999. Whereas Warrington won last year and they could be creating a mini dynasty, so they have got the slight edge with the experience of being in it last year.”
Whilst not ruling out a Leeds triumph, Offiah made the point that “They only beat St Helens by four points whereas Warrington wiped the floor with Catalans and Catalans beat St Helens a couple of weeks before”.
Whilst players from both teams will be desperate to get their hands on winners’ medals, Offiah, who graced the game for a number of years, talked about how the most prized memorabilia he collected from his career were his medals or the Wigan jersey that now adorns the wall in his house. He further joked about how modern sportsmen may make a beeline for the top players in an attempt to swap shirts with them due to the value of such memorabilia. And although that was not the done thing back in his day, Offiah did state he wouldn’t mind getting his hands on an authentic Michael Jordan jersey.
