Previously known as the internet sensation who stormed the charts with her catchy debut single ‘I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker’, the Scottish singer Sandi Thom played the Jazz Cafe, Camden on Saturday night appearing with a new image, and a new style.
To open the show, upcoming Blues star Marcus Bonfanti impressed the crowd setting the tone for the remainder of the evening, both with his sound and quality.
It was then that Thom took to the stage and showcased her new Blues and country folk sound. And it was this new sound which the crowd inside this intimate venue lapped up.
Her rendition of ‘The House of the Rising Sun’ along with the excellently written songs off her latest studio album, ‘Merchants & Thieves’, displayed not only her talent, but also her apparent love for both this genre of music and the direction it is now taking her in.
However, even if Thom is attempting to move on from the days of her chart success, the crowd still enjoyed singing along to ‘Punk Rocker’ despite the song being re-arranged in a more bluesy style.
Other special guests to accompany Thom included twelve-year-old guitar sensation Aaron Keylock, and to close the night’s proceedings the very talented Thomas Hare.
The concert stressed more than anything that it should be talented musicians like Thom that return into the charts, replacing much of the fabricated music that occupies radio space in this modern generation.
