Attempting to follow 49 films with a fresh and innovative one is never going to be an easy task. Let alone when it is 49 animated Disney films.
Whilst the sheer legacy and tradition may be overwhelming for some, the obvious problem of trying to invent or reinvent another fairytale may halt others.
However, directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard have come up with a truly magical movie to mark the landmark Disney 50th.
‘Tangled’, which has already proved to be a commercial success in the US, is released on the 28th January across the UK, and it looks to add a new spin to The Brothers Grimm tale of Rapunzal.
The movie tells the story of the long-haired Princess Rapunzel who has spent her entire life in a tower, but when she falls in love with a bandit who was passing by she must venture into the outside world for the first time to find him.
Mandy Moore stars as the lead character Rapunzal and commenting on joining the elite club of actresses who have played a Disney princess, she said:
“I sit here and think what little girl doesn’t dream of being a Disney princess. I grew up in Orlando so I feel Disney is in my blood. So many of the films were seminal parts of my childhood so it’s still mindboggling to think I’m now part of that Disney lineage.”
Whilst Moore plays the stereotypical Disney princess, it is evident that the stock character of ‘Prince Charming’ has vanished and the directors were eager to discuss their changes to the male lead:
“A lot of the past Disney princes have been soft and not that cool. They’re good guys. So we took that to the other extreme and we like cocky, arrogant characters.”
Greno and Howard did admit though that some colleagues were slightly concerned when the character had suddenly turned into an arrogant thief and ladies’ man.
This change is seen by many as just one of the ways the classic storyline has been reinvigorated and modernised to fit today’s audience, as well as attempting to attract a larger male proportion amongst the audience.
With ‘Tangled’ predicted to open with great success across the UK as well, the film may just be the start of the journey for this new fairytale.
The directors also discussed the possibility of ‘Tangled’ being made into a stage show with Moore happy to reprise her role on the boards of a Broadway stage:
“I've always loved the idea of being on Broadway, it's the ultimate dream for me, but I would have to figure out how to cope with the hair, as it’s quite a lot to lug around. My neck muscles would bulge!"
‘Tangled’ opens in cinemas across the UK in Disney Digital 3D on the 28th January. Rated: PG. RT: 110mins
