Perhaps the first ‘family film’ to be more eagerly anticipated by teenagers and adults than by children, Pixar and Disney have teamed up to release the third and final film in the Toy Story series, eleven years after the highly regarded second instalment was unveiled.
With the large time gap in between films, those who were children when the initial Toy Story film was released are obviously now considerably older, and it is for this reason that the film is targeted at all age ranges. The Facebook group ‘Move out of the way children I've been waiting 11 years to see Toy Story 3...’ boasts nearly two million members worldwide, suggesting that adolescents are keen to watch the new instalment and engage in such nostalgia.
The film’s plot is similarly nostalgic with the central character Andy, now 17 years old, preparing to move to college and shown to have outgrown his toys. Although the film contains a similar plot to the previous instalment, it remains remarkably humorous throughout, with the second-half spoofing many jail-break movies.
Once again the film is enhanced by the great voice-overs from such stars as Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, and combined with the ever-improving animation technology; the characters are truly brought to life, and for the first time in the series in 3D. Some of the best moments arrive thanks to the introduction of the new character ‘Barbie’s Ken’, and Buzz being switched to Spanish speaking mode.
Aside from the many moments of hilarity, the film concludes with a very touching scene which not only provides a deserving ending to a fantastic trilogy, but prompts the teenagers in the audience to share Andy’s feelings, and others to wipe away the tears from underneath their 3D glasses. Overall the movie is truly funny, exciting and poignant.
The eleven year wait has been worthwhile.
